Ja 1 "Backyard BBQ

The Ja 1 “Backyard BBQ” Big Kids’ Basketball Shoes are perfect for young athletes willing to dominate the court one day.

Released in Oct 2023 with the most special Backyard BBQ theme, this shoe has already been carrying the stardom of Ja Morant. Available in 13 different sizes and suitable for both boys and girls.

Ja 1 comes with three special Classic laces, a Forefoot strap, and an extended Swoosh design that makes it one of the best and most iconic shoes of all time.

When I first saw the shoe, I ordered one for my kid as he is so very interested in practicing with me whenever he gets the chance.

In this blog, I will break down the review and make it easy for you to understand.

What is the backstory behind the “Backyard BBQ” theme?

The “Backyard BBQ” theme celebrates the journey of NBA star Ja Morant to stardom. It pays tribute to the concrete court that he built with his dad in their South Carolina backyard. This is where he practiced his skills and grew up amidst family and friends’ backyard barbecues.

The bright colors of blue, orange, and teal in the design bring back memories of playful times and community connection. It serves as a reminder to young players that they can achieve their dreams, even if they start in their backyard.

How good is the traction on different surfaces (outdoor courts, gym floors)?

The Ja 1 “Backyard BBQ” comes with a very professional multi-directional tread pattern designed for excellent grip on both indoor and outdoor courts.

If we look closely, we’ll see the rubber outsole is so well made that it will provide solid traction on gym floors, while its aggressive herringbone pattern is absolutely ready to deliver superior bite on outdoor asphalt or concrete.

However, you must know that, if you are to play with the shoe outdoors, you might wear down the outsole faster.

Overall, this shoe provides versatile traction for various court surfaces, ideal for players who switch between indoor and outdoor games.

How does the shoe fit compared to other Nike basketball shoes?

Ja 1 “Backyard BBQ” generally runs true to size, offering a comfortable and snug fit. Compared to other Nike basketball shoes like the LeBron Witness, which tends wider, the Ja 1 has a slightly narrower forefoot.

It sits closer to the foot than the Kyrie Irving shoes, providing a better court feel and responsiveness.
In case you have wider feet than usual, you might want to consider going for a half-size-up. Keep in mind that every person’s feet are different, so it’s always recommended to try on the shoes to get the best fit possible.

Is the Ja 1 “Backyard BBQ” a good shoe for beginners, intermediate, or advanced players?

Ja 1 “Backyard BBQ” welcomes players of all levels. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner, intermediate, or advanced, this shoe takes em all.

Now why am I saying this? Because of the supportive ankle collar and responsive cushioning.
These two features make this shoe very comfortable and stable for developing players, while its lightweight construction and traction suit fast-paced games for intermediate and advanced players.
Now here comes the tricky part.

The shoe is designed for point guards and perimeter players who need agility and quick cuts. However, it may not be suitable for centers or those who prefer heavy, high-top shoes.
